THE VENUE

This neoclassical palace stands between the Strand and the river and occupies the same site as the original Somerset House built in 1547 by Edward Seymour. Following his downfall, Seymour's monument to wealth and power became royal property. Serving as a residence to the Queens of England the palace became associated with the lavish entertainments of the royal court. In 1776 the Queen's court moved to Buckingham Palace and Sir William Chambers was commissioned to design the present day masterpiece in the Palladian style.
